Google Ready To Go Head-To-Head With iPhone

Published

on

Google had a big unveiling this week. The tech giant launched a new line of hardware, including a powerful line of phones, a virtual reality headset, and a much improved Google Chromecast. But the star of the show was their new smartphone, the Google Pixel. Have they leveled the smartphone playing field at all?

Google Released Their Very First Smartphone – Pixel

This week’s big news for the search engine giant is the unveiling of the Pixel smartphone. Company representatives call it the “first phone made by Google inside and out.” The device looks impressive, but is it ready to take on the iPhone?

On the surface …. Yes. The Pixel is an impressive piece of technology. Google’s Pixel smartphone will feature a 5” screen. And the Pixel XL, Google’s larger model, houses a 5.5” screen. The smartphones will feature Google’s A.I. tech, giving Pixel’s virtual assistant a strong edge against Siri.

Both phones have 4GB of RAM, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, a fingerprint sensor and a 12MP rear-facing camera with built in video stabilization. They claim the phones can run for up to seven hours with just 15 minutes of charging. And to really sweeten the deal, the phones come with unlimited picture and video storage. All for the same price as the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus.

But what about outside of the tech specs?

Google is a software company making a big hardware play. The technology is great, but oftentimes it takes more than that to win. Apple and Android already have a huge head start here. The company isn't trying to build a fanbase here so much as it is trying to pry fans away from their iPhone and Android.

The company is on the right track with the free unlimited picture and video storage, but the price point may be high for a company just coming into a new product – especially one which has plenty of competition already. On top of that, Google Pixel is available exclusively through Verizon. Now, while this worked with the original Droid phone, which was released to contest the iPhone, (at the time only available through AT&T), there’s no guarantee of success this time. The iPhone was the first of its kind. A true smartphone. Is Google Pixel a new kind of phone?

No.

The Pixel will pick up users through specials and offers via Verizon. It won’t be enough to compete with Apple, but they will get some fans here. When paired with the rest of Google’s new products revealed this week, there’s definitely a lot to love about Alphabet and Google (GOOG) here.
