Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) wants the GOP to repeal Obamacare once the GOP regains the majority in 2024. This means a clean sweep in the White House, the House, and the Senate.

It also means resurrecting the fight against the Affordable Care Act they largely gave up on in 2018.

Right now, Johnson said that the GOP’s main goal is to obstruct President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party’s agenda until the midterm elections this year.

If the Republicans regain the White House two years later, then they could proceed with the programs.

One such program is the need to repeal Obamacare. Before the GOP does so, Johnson said they need to fix the US healthcare system.

He wants to have a plan to replace Obamacare ready by the time they regain the majority. He pointed out that the lack of an alternative program doomed their chances to repeal Obamacare last time.

2018 Last Time Republicans Tried To Repeal Obamacare

Under then-President Donald Trump, Republicans controlled both Congress and the White House. However, their plan to repeal Obamacare at the time failed, especially as three moderate Republicans refused to lend their support to their party.

Now that a Democrat President is in office, the ACA grew more popular. Last year, the White House announced that 31 million Americans now have healthcare coverage through the ACA.

This is the highest number of enrollees since the program started in 2010. During a special enrollment period last year, around 2.8 million Americans signed up for it. This helped them find insurance coverage during the coronavirus pandemic.

Will the Rest of the GOP Still Want To Repeal Obamacare?

However, it remains unclear how many GOP lawmakers will still want to repeal Obamacare and replace it with a new program.

In fact, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnel (KY) insisted that they will not release a platform ahead of the midterm elections. He said that the party needs to reveal its plans for running Congress only “when we take it back.”

Since Obamacare's approval in 2009, the Republican party pushed more than 60 unsuccessful Congressional votes to defeat it.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court already debated it four times in its ten years’ existence. When the government shut down in 2013, Obamacare was at the center of the opposition for new budgets.
