Trump Announces His Nomination of Neil Gorsuch to Supreme Court

Justice Antonin Scalia passed away in February of 2016. While President Obama moved to fill the role, Republicans, including President Donald Trump, stalled, saying that the American people should have a voice in who takes over the empty seat. Now, that seat has a possible successor as Donald Trump went on Facebook Live to announce his choice of Denver Federal Appeals Judge Neil Gorsuch..

What Do We Know About Neil Gorsuch?

It’s a little ironic that Neil Gorsuch would be taking over Justice Antonin Scalia’s seat if confirmed, since he’s described as a Scalia Clone. President Trump’s pick makes a lot of sense, because he’s presenting a known commodity to the Senate.

Gorsuch is a hardline conservative, but is slightly less extreme and controversial on issues such as abortion and gay rights. Gorsuch is only 49 years old, meaning that he would project to at least 3 decades on the court, more than any of the other candidates for Supreme Court Justice.

The Denver Judge believes laws should be interpreted as they are written, and that the constitution should be enforced as the founding fathers intended. What’s interesting about the pick is that his views could clash with Trump’s extreme actions. That may actually be Trump’s thinking as he hopes for Democrats to confirm his pick.

But would that really be enough?

The fact is, it doesn’t matter who Trump nominates. Democrats will filibuster and vote against any Trump pick. Democrats have already announced they’ll refuse to consider any pick outside the mainstream, citing President Trump’s and Republicans’ similar reaction to President Obama’s nomination of Merrick B. Garland, who was a popular pick on both sides of the aisle but was shot down by Republicans solely on the grounds that he was Obama’s final choice. As a result, Trump is already urging Republicans to change the rules to allow him to push through his nomination with a simple majority.

Eventually, there has to be some kind of compromise. Whether that’s on the side of Trump or Democrats, or both remains to be seen. So far, Democrats have fought and argued against every single Trump pick. However, with Republicans controlling both the House and the Senate, there’s a fair chance Judge Gorsuch becomes Justice Gorsuch.
