Previously, the US set a global record of 1.03 million new cases on January 3. Mondays are the days where US health officials report the daily number of cases.

Many US states do not report figures over the weekend. As a result, America’s seven-day average tripled to 700,000 new infections a day compared to numbers two weeks ago.

For the new record of 1.13 million new cases last Monday, the final number can still go higher. Not all states have given their report on the exact number of cases in their area.

From all indications, the final figure of daily coronavirus cases will definitely go higher. The country also reported an all-time record of hospitalized Americans due to COVID-19.

Last Monday, more than 135,500 people received treatment at hospitals due to COVID. This beat the previous record of 132,051 set in January last year.

Even If Omicron is Less Severe, Hospitals Remain Overwhelmed

Even as reports say that the Omicron strain is less severe, health officials still have trouble dealing with it. The sheer number of daily coronavirus cases is presently overwhelming many hospitals and medical centers.

As doctors and staff struggle to handle the rise in COVID patients, many hospitals are now suspending elective procedures.

With increased hospitalization rates come deaths as well. However, the number of Americans dying from COVID-19 is much lower with Omicron compared to other variants.

At present, deaths are averaging 1,700 per day. This is above the average of 1,400 reported earlier this year. Both numbers are within levels experienced earlier during the current winter.

Even Transportation And Corporate Offices Report Mass Absences

The surge doesn’t stop at medical centers. The current epidemic is also disrupting schools. The high number of absent staff due to infections means a lot of suspended classes.

The staffing problem isn’t just with teachers, as school staff, bus drivers, and janitors are also calling in sick. In fact, the city of Chicago canceled classes for the fourth day in a row. The district and its teachers have yet to agree on how to deal with the rising number of cases.

Meanwhile, New York City also suspended services for three of its subway lines due to a large number of workers on sick leave. Many companies are also halting plans to compel employees to return to the office.
