CEO Mark Thompson, appointed in late 2023, has prioritized a digital-first approach to address the plummeting viewership and revenue. The network’s ratings, particularly among the 25-54 age demographic, have continued to decline throughout 2024. November’s election coverage, once a stronghold for CNN, saw it fall behind competitors like MSNBC and Fox News. This decline has significantly impacted CNN’s revenue, which dropped from $2.2 billion in 2021 to $1.8 billion in 2023.

This plan includes launching a $3.99 monthly paywall, reorganizing production, and relocating certain programs to Atlanta for cost efficiency.
CNN’s programming lineup is also under review. Longtime anchors like Wolf Blitzer are reportedly being moved to less prominent slots, while Jim Acosta faces potential reassignment to late-night hours. Meanwhile, investments in hiring data scientists and product developers aim to strengthen CNN’s digital footprint.
Despite these changes, the challenge remains: can CNN ratings rebound in a world increasingly dominated by streaming services and social media? Thompson’s vision emphasizes adaptability, but the network must balance innovation with maintaining journalistic credibility.

The struggles with CNN ratings are not isolated. Networks like NBC News and the Associated Press have also announced layoffs to address declining revenue. NBC News plans to cut fewer than 50 employees, a smaller number compared to CNN’s widespread layoffs.

Even traditional powerhouses like Fox News and MSNBC are adapting, though they continue to outperform CNN in viewership. Fox News, for example, dominated recent coverage of Trump’s inauguration, leaving CNN far behind in ratings.     I have not watched CNN in decades and am disappointed when Fox News shows clips from CNN. More than half the population know that CNN is not a news organization, rather, a marketing tool for liberal bias and outright lies.
