Two days in the sick bay cost me $5,929. Why won’t my travel insurance pay?

Oceania Cruises hands Murray Cohen a bill for $5,929 after he’s hospitalized on a Mediterranean cruise. Why is his travel insurance company dragging its feet on his claim?

Q: I recently took a Mediterranean cruise on Oceania’s MS Marina. I bought Allianz Global Assistance trip insurance through my travel agent, and paid $789 for coverage for me and my wife. The travel insurance includes $25,000 medical coverage for the cruise.

Three days before the cruise ended, I awoke shivering with a temperature of 103.1 degrees. The ship’s medical staff treated me with IV antibiotics and other medications, and gave me a chest X-ray. I was in the sick bay for two days.

I am over 65 years of age and have Medicare health insurance, which does not cover anything outside the U.S. That is one main reason I bought the trip insurance. I sent the medical records and invoice from Oceania to Allianz in late October once I returned from my cruise and started a claim. After two weeks, I called and chatted with Allianz online and was told that the claim was still under review.

It’s been three weeks, and Allianz just sent me a request for an explanation of benefits from my primary and supplemental insurance. I sent an email back to the company letting it know that there is no explanation of benefits, since I can’t file a claim from out of the country with Medicare.

How long can Allianz drag this on? It advertises quick claim resolution, and states that it reviews claims in seven to 10 days. I would consider that to be untrue. I paid Oceania $5,929 for two days of onboard medical care. Can you help expedite this claim?

A: Did you say you paid $5,929 for two days in the sick bay? What did they do, give you a makeover? These expenses should have been covered by your travel insurance, of course – and quickly. When your insurance company started asking for more time, it should have explained why and given you an estimate on how much longer your claim would take. Unfortunately, travel insurance companies don’t always do that, so they leave you guessing.

You made the right call, buying insurance. Without your Allianz policy, you would have paid the $5,929 out of pocket with no hope for reimbursement.

Travel insurance works in a deliberate – often painfully deliberate – way. An adjuster needs to verify that you’re not covered by other insurance and complete other kinds of due diligence before cutting a check.

It appears Allianz had asked you to file a claim with your primary and/or supplemental health insurer and to contact it when your claim had been finalized. It also requested an explanation of benefits or a letter of denial of coverage, both of which are routine but can take some time. Travel insurance companies can fast-track claims of under $100, in my experience, but for something like this, they really need to cross the t’s and dot the i’s.

If you’d received a rejection, or if the claims process had gone on another month, you might have reached out to one of the Allianz customer-service executives. I list their names, numbers and email addresses on my consumer-advocacy site.

I contacted Allianz on your behalf, and it paid your entire claim. So what was the holdup? Evidently, it really needed you to file a claim with your primary insurance carrier, Medicare, even though the claim would be denied. Rules are rules.

By the year 2040, international travel will be a faster, easier and more ecologically sustainable activity than ever before, according to a report commissioned by Allianz Partners to help prepare for the travel-related needs of their customers in the future. Allianz Partners is a world leader in B2B2C assistance and insurance solutions, delivering global protection and care, and offers dedicated travel insurance services through the Allianz Travel brand.

Authored by internationally renowned futurologist, Ray Hammond, ‘The World in 2040’ futurology series presents likely future developments and trends that will impact international travel and the traveler experience over the next 20 years. The report identifies key trends which will, collectively, revolutionize the travel landscape by 2040:

1. Virtual & Augmented Reality

Multi-sensory virtual reality technology will allow armchair travel planners to ‘step into’ virtual hotel rooms, visit street carnivals, explore museums or walk into restaurants, from the comfort of their own living room. This trend is expected to fuel an appetite for more real-life travel, rather than hinder it.

2. Instant check-in thanks to new technology

Facial pattern recognition systems are already in experimental use at airports and within 20 years, computer systems that can reliably identify your face will be in widespread use to check-in seamlessly.

3. Hotel software assistants

While some luxury hotels will greet their guests with a human face, many business and budget hotels will use automated check-in and guidance to rooms provided by software assistants. Some hotels will even provide robotic baggage carriers to move luggage.

4. Super-fast trains

Cross-border train journeys will be smoother and much improved in many parts of the world. Computer networks and the ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) will manage national and international rail networks, allowing trains to run faster and closer together. Train speed will also increase on most rail networks, with most high-speed trains running at speeds above 125 mph.

5. On-site 3D clothes printing

In 2040, it will be possible to send your measurements to your hotel in advance of your arrival and heavy or bulky clothes (e.g. raincoats or shoes) will have been printed out to await your arrival, reducing the amount of luggage the tourist of 2040 will have to transport. The low cost of 3D printed garments means travelers will be able to leave the clothes behind for local recycling.

6. Sustainable cruises

Cruise ships will be far more environmentally friendly than today’s giant ocean liners. Vessels will be powered by Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), a light fossil fuel with almost no greenhouse gas emissions, transforming cruise vacations into one of the greenest ways to travel the world. The range of cruise destinations will also continue to grow, with Asia proving particularly fertile ground.

7. Space as a regular destination

For some travelers in 2040, the world may not be enough as it may not offer a sufficiently large choice of destinations. By that time, it’s likely that tourists will be flying to and from the Moon on a regular basis as they seek the experience of seeing the Earth from space.

Commenting on the transformation expected for travelers by 2040, Ray Hammond said: “The face of travel as we know it will change dramatically over the next 20 years. Airline passenger numbers are forecast to double by that time and the travel industry is coming under increasing pressure from travelers for faster and more efficient travel experiences. By 2040, personal software assistants will be sufficiently intelligent to help travelers book their trips online and they will be able to cope with all the complexities of multi-destination travel planning in order to meet the needs of the traveler. Travel will also become more about rejuvenation, adventure, fulfillment and learning new skills rather than just ticking off places to see from a list.”

Speaking about the impact of the report for the business, Joe Mason, Chief Marketing Officer at Allianz Partners, Travel Line of Business, said: “The ‘Future Travel Experience’ report allows Allianz Partners to foresee the trends and changes in travel so we can work towards redefining travel insurance. More travelers are planning adventurous experiences this winter, with interest increasing more than 150% compared to last year, according to customer data from travel insurance comparison site, Squaremouth.

With more travelers taking to the slopes, Squaremouth reveals 4 travel insurance tips that even the most daring adventure-seekers should know before participating in activities this winter.

1. Don’t Pay More for Popular Winter Sports

Common winter sports like skiing and snowboarding can be covered under a standard travel insurance policy, and don’t require expensive upgrades. Even extreme activities, like heli-skiing or ice climbing, can be covered by policies specifically designed to cover those more dangerous activities.

Tip: Many travel insurance policies don’t explicitly list all the activities they cover. Call your travel insurance provider, or use this activity selection matrix, to ensure your sports are covered.

2. Expensive Equipment Rentals and Lift Tickets Can Be Reimbursed

Travelers can be reimbursed for all of their prepaid costs, including equipment rentals, lift tickets or lessons, if they have to cancel or interrupt their trip for a reason covered by the policy.

Tip: Remember to insure one-off costs like rentals or lessons. If you are prevented from traveling because of an illness, injury, or unexpected winter storm, you may be reimbursed for these often expensive arrangements.

3. Costly Medical Evacuation Can Be Covered

With the majority of travelers staying stateside for their winter trips this year, medical evacuation coverage can be a key benefit, as most U.S. health insurance companies do not cover evacuation services. This benefit can coordinate and cover evacuation if a traveler is injured while skiing or snowboarding in the mountains, where medical care isn’t easily accessible.

Tip: Consider a medical-only policy. Domestic travelers can typically spend less on a travel insurance policy, than on their primary medical deductible, especially if an evacuation is required.

4. Protection for Personal Sports Equipment

Some travel insurance policies provide reimbursement if a traveler’s sports equipment is lost or damaged during their trip. This benefit can also reimburse travelers if they incur additional expenses renting new equipment on their trip.
