Kinzinger Hints January 6 Panel Investigating Trump Involvement

Representative Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) said they will look into former President Donald Trump’s role in the January 6 riot. The House select committee will investigate whether Trump committed a crime with his involvement.

Kinzinger Wants To Check Extent of Trump’s Involvement

The Republican congressman is one of two GOP members in the select committee investigating the January 6 incident. The other Republican member is Representative Liz Cheney (WY).

Kinzinger said that they have yet to form an opinion about Trump’s participation. “I don't want to go there yet to say, ‘Do I believe he has (committed a crime),' I think that's obviously a pretty big thing to say,” he said.

The Illinois representative said that they’ll have a pretty good idea “by the end of our investigation and by the time our report is out.” 

Once the investigation concludes, the GOP congressman said that they can have the results out in the public record. And then, maybe the Justice Department can work from there. “So look, here's the thing with the report.

January 6 is a very important day. We will get every bit of detail that we can possibly get on that … what I think is almost more important is what led up to January 6?

What is the rot in the democracy that allowed the 6th to happen? And have we corrected from that since?” he added. 

Bipartisan Committee Probing January 6

The House select committee with its bipartisan panel started probing the January 6 attack on the Capitol. Earlier, the House impeached Trump for inciting the riot.

However, the GOP-majority Senate acquitted the former president. Ironically, it wouldn't matter as Trump left office a few days before the vote. 

Meanwhile, Kinzinger refused to confirm or deny a media report that former Texas Governor Rick Perry was the author of a controversial text message.

The message, sent to then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows a day after the elections, called for “aggressive strategy”.  It said that three state legislatures should ignore the will of voters and deliver their state electors to Trump. 

Kinzinger Said Public Should Know The Truth

Kinzinger also said that the public should learn the truth. Last week, the committee released some text messages that Meadows received from politicians during the January 6 riots.

“We have a trail of Mark Meadows being aware now of what was happening at the Capitol, not just, you know, ‘Maybe I knew. Maybe I watched news' and everyone may know that that wasn't true. But you now have proof of it,” Kinzinger said. 

The Illinois congressman said that there are “People desperately pleading for him to get the President to be involved,” he said.

Kinzinger added that for “something like 182 minutes, nobody heard from them. Nobody knew what he was up to despite this being all over the news, and we know he watches the news.”
