The sanctions prevent those on the list from entering Russia and accessing whatever bank accounts they have in the country.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan also joined the list.

Joining them are NSA deputy adviser Daleep Singh, USAID’s Samantha Power, as well as Treasury’s Wally Adeyemo. Finally, Export-Import Bank president Jo Lewis rounded up the list.

In a statement, Russia's foreign ministry said that the sanctions were the inevitable result of the extremely “Russophobic” actions of the Biden administration.

Consequently, the sanctions will block Biden and his group from entering Russia. It will also freeze any assets held in the country.

In addition, the foreign ministry warned that similar sanctions can result in the future, particularly to US lawmakers.

Psaki Mocks Sanctions on US President

The White House seemed unperturbed at Moscow’s sanctions. The Press Secretary in particular mocked the issuance of sanctions against them.

During Tuesday’s White House news briefing, Psaki said the Russian sanctions are ineffectual. She also noted that the foreign ministry misspelled Biden’s name.

She said that the President is a junior. By issuing the sanction to Joseph Biden, “they may have sanctioned his dad, may he rest in peace,” she said.

In addition, she said Russia need not worry about plans to enter Russia or find ways to retrieve frozen funds. “None of us are planning tourist trips to Russia,” she said.

The money shouldn’t also be a problem. “None of us have bank accounts we won’t be able to access, so we will forge ahead,” she remarked.

Russia’s sanctions on US President Based on Reciprocity

The Russian foreign ministry defended its issuance of the sanctions. It insisted that it served Biden and the others the sanctions “on the basis of reciprocity”.

Earlier, the United States imposed sanctions on about 200 Russians ever since the country invaded Ukraine.

The sanctions list included President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. It also included most of the Russian oligarchs known for their ties to Putin.

The US also imposed additional penalties on Moscow. This includes freezing the country’s bank reserves and halting all technology imports. Recently, Biden announced that the US will end all oil and gas imports from Russia.

Russian Elites Feeling The Pinch

Wealthy Russian elites are already feeling the effects of the sanctions. Most of Russia’s billionaires stashed their money overseas, according to a 2017 National Bureau of Economic Research report.

Russian oligarchs have as much wealth hidden abroad as the combined wealth of all Russians has in Russia.

Already, countries such as Italy, France, and Germany started seizing assets owned by wealthy Russian billionaires such as yachts and buildings.
