Dave Chappelle Returns To Netflix, Unfazed By Attempts To Cancel Him

Even after attempts to cancel him, comedian Dave Chappelle returned to Netflix this week. He announced the resumption of a Netflix comedy tour that the COVID-19 pandemic canceled.

With the announcement, Dave Chappelle continues to prove that he can withstand attempts to cancel him. He announced that he will be joining a Netflix-sponsored comedy tour.

Joining Chappelle are other headliners such as Tina Fey, Wanda Sykes, Jerry Seinfeld, David Letterman, and Chris Rock.  Amy Schumer, Ali Wong, Hasan Minhaj, and Ronny Chieng will also join the tour. 

The inclusion of Chappelle in the lineup comes after the heels of his comedy special last October. A group of trans activists petitioned Netflix to remove his show “The Closer”.

However, Netflix publicly backed the comedian and refused any moves to cancel the artist or the show. 

No Apologies

David Chappelle himself refused to issue an apology to the group calling for his cancellation. 

Instead, the comedian blamed the media and corporations for adding fuel to the flame. In fact, Chappelle offered to meet the trans employees of Netflix. They spearhead the group calling for the cancellation of Chappelle’s show. 

“I want everyone in this audience to know that even though the media frames it that it’s me versus that community, that is not what it is,” Chappelle said in an Instagram video.

“This has nothing to do with them. It’s about corporate interests and what I can say and what I cannot say. For the record, and I need you to know this, everyone I know from [the trans] community has been loving and supporting, so I don’t know what all this nonsense is about.”

He’ll Talk But Only On His Terms

Later, Chappelle offered to talk to affected groups about his stance on the issue. However, he insisted he will only do so under his terms.

“You cannot have this conversation and exclude my voice from it,” Chappelle posted. “That is only fair. You have to answer the question — am I canceled or not? Now let’s go.”

Obviously, with his return to Netflix, the rhetorical answer is No. Netflix insisted on inserting Chappelle into their lineup.

The other comedians can actually ensure the tour will generate huge audiences. However, Netflix stood by its man and didn’t blink.
