In March of this year, Washington D.C.’s city council voted to decriminalize the possession of up to one ounce of marijuana. The vote set another landmark in the increasing legality of marijuana possession throughout the United States. Though the movement is in its infancy, the states of Washington and Colorado have already taken major steps, legalizing the recreational use of cannabis.

With all of that going on, it’s fair to say marijuana is on the national mind.
Before recent years, an article titled “How to Invest in Marijuana” would have raised a few eyebrows; in 2014. It’s not such an unconventional idea.
Although marijuana’s status throughout the country remains mostly illegal, there’s no doubt that legalized marijuana is an emerging trend in the U.S.—and a trend from which a savvy investor could benefit.
Reason.com even highlighted a DEA agent who leaped from enforcing drug laws to joining up with a private equity firm that invests in marijuana holdings. This particular agent said that many of his former colleagues were interested in his venture and some even asked for jobs.
Another investor has gone even further and claimed that marijuana-related investments will be the top-performing investments of the decade. Todd Harrison believes that the momentum of shifting attitudes surrounding marijuana coupled with increasingly loosened marijuana regulations make it a natural investment for many people.
Many people believe that the industry of marijuana may be headed for a “gold rush” of sorts. But before you start clamoring for stocks of your own and jumping in with both feet, consider both the risks and rewards.
